Josephine Mary was born near Riverside, Washington Co., Iowa, to Stephen and Christine Mary on April 22, 1881. Her twin brother, Joseph, died February 26, 1928. Her young life was spent in the Riverside community until her graduation there in 1899 from St. Mary's school. Following graduation she enrolled at the Academy in Iowa City, Iowa, as a student in a 2-year general business training course. Upon completion of her studies in Iowa City, she pursued higher education at Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa. Her desire to enter the millinery business led her to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1904 where she studied under the direction of representatives of the widely-known and highly respected firm of The Lyman Brothers.

Josephine Mary's artistic ability in the millinery field quickly earned for her an enviable reputation and state-wide recognition both as a designer and capable business woman. It was in Anthon, Iowa, where she established a millinery shop where she met Richard Hudgel, an undertaker and furniture dealer, the man who was to become her husband.

Josephine & Richard Hudgel were married in Riverside, Iowa, on November 24, 1909. Following the ceremony they returned to the Anthon community where they spent their entire married life.

Twelve children were born to them, eight of whom survive: Dr. Lawrence E. Hudgel of Casper, Wyoming; Edwin F. Hudgel of Tucson, Arizona; Mrs. George P. (Susan) Mack of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Richard D. (Edith) Moore of St. Paul, Minnesota; Mrs. James E. (Herma) Cummings of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Eldred A. (Marjorie) Loyd of Hornick, Iowa; Mrs. J.G. (Mary Clare) Holland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Mrs. Thomas P. (Jeanette) Kelley of Davenport, Iowa.

The eldest son, Claude B. Hudgel of Security, Colorado, died July 19, 1973. Three children died in infancy, namely: Clarence, Herman and Margaret. Her husband, Richard Hudgel, died May 3, 1943.

She is survived also by 26 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren.
