Charles “Charlie” Martin Thorpe, 69, of Sloan, Iowa, passed away December 28, 2022, at his residence.

A Memorial Service will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, January 5, 2023, at the Community Church of Christ, Sloan, Iowa, with Dr. Emery Killian and Pastor Kody Killian, officiating. A visitation from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M., on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at the church. A live stream of the service will post on the Goslar Funeral Home Website with Charlie’s Obituary. A luncheon will follow the service at the Sloan Community Hall with burial afterwards at the Sloan Cemetery, Sloan, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Charlie was born on April 18, 1953, the son of Rupert and Dorothy (Henrich) Thorpe in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. He attended elementary school in Salix and graduated from Westwood High School in Sloan, Iowa with the Class of 1971. He served on the Salix Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Charlie married Sandra Davis on November 10, 1984, in Elk Point, SD. The couple resided in Salix for a short time before moving to Sloan in 1986. Charlie was a very active community member serving on the city council and several terms as the mayor, the role he was currently serving in.

Charlie worked at Wilson Trailer in Sioux City, Iowa for almost forty-four years, retiring in 2019. He enjoyed playing softball in his younger years, golfing, boating and spending time at his cabin on the river. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Westwood Rebels fan. He truly loved spending time with his family and friends, of which he had many. He knew someone everywhere he went and had many nicknames. However, his most favorite title was Papa.

He was a member of the Community Church of Christ, in Sloan, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Thorpe of Sloan, Iowa; two daughters, Stephanie Thorpe of Mankato, Minnesota and Haley (Ryan) Strom of Sloan, Iowa; grandchildren, Ashley (Dylan) Strom, Lexy Strom, and Blaine Strom; siblings, Carol Thorpe of Reno, Nevada, Beverly Thorpe of Salix, Iowa, Roxann Thorpe of Salix, Iowa, Pamela (Ernie) Lavagetto of Walnut Creek, California, and Marc (Vivian) Thorpe of Sun City West, Arizona; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Sue (Bill) Blatchford of Sioux City, Iowa, Patty (Greg) Koenig of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Penny (Joe) Galvin of Monument, Colorado; many nieces and nephews and “adopted” grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rupert and Dorothy Thorpe; parents-in-law, Russell and Margaret Davis; son, Brock Thorpe; and nephew, Nick Galvin.
