Neal Edward Asmussen

Sioux City

Neal Edward Asmussen, 87, of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022, at Bickford Cottages surrounded by family.

Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Todd Schlitter officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Online condolences may be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Neal was born on Feb. 6, 1935, in Sioux City to Edward and Celia (Bogenreif) Asmussen. He graduated from Leeds High School in 1954. As a senior, Neal was talked into playing football, played quarterback for the team and led the team to an undefeated season. He was an outstanding athlete and was offered a scholarship to Morningside College for basketball, but Neal decided he would rather work and raise a family. He married Sharon Arlene McGarr on Feb. 8, 1957, at the Methodist Church in Leeds, after briefly serving his country in the United States Army. Neal purchased his grandfather's home in 1963, which had been built in 1903 (the 3rd house built in Leeds).

Neal was a wholesale hardware salesman, working for over 40 years for Knapp and Spencer Hardware (later bought by Wright Wilhelmy Company). He continued using his athletic abilities throughout his life, having been a great bowler, avid bird hunter, and was a member of three golf courses, Green Valley, Moville, and Two Rivers. Neal and Sharon were excellent dancers and did a lot of dancing in the early years. He enjoyed being a member of the Masonic Lodge in Leeds in his earlier years. Neal was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Chief fan.

Neal is survived by his sons Tod (Cari), Stoy (Diane), and Heath; four grandchildren Trevor, Sarah, Sammy, and Zane; and many relatives and friends.

Neal was preceded in death by his parents; wife Sharon in June of 2022; and sisters Bonnie Martin and Nancy McBride.

A very special thanks go out to the staff at Bickford Cottages Memory Care Unit and St. Croix Hospice for their professionalism and TLC.
