Michael Doran Hanna, 78, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, at Milwaukee Catholic Home in Milwaukee, Wis., with his daughter by his side, following a period of declining health.

Michael "Mike" was born on Jan. 13, 1944, in Ottumwa, Iowa to Russell and Wanda Hanna. Following graduation from Des Moines North in 1962, he attended Morningside College in Sioux City on a baseball scholarship. He met his wife Jeanne Gwinn at Morningside; they married in 1966 and were together for 42 years, raising a daughter, Susan, and a son, James.

Mike worked for over 35 years for the Iowa Department of Human Services, first in Mason City, then Fort Dodge, and finally back to Sioux City until retirement. Although a social worker by profession, Mike was a coach at heart, whether (loudly) from his recliner or successfully coaching his children's sports and academic teams, regardless of whether he knew a thing about them. His coaching motto was always: "together we work; together we win."

Mike was an Eagle Scout and active in the Episcopal church, the Masons (50+ years), Eastern Star (50+ years), Scottish Rite, and the Shriners - particularly the Hospital Dads. He was a lifelong fan of sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. Encouraged by his own dad, he was a baseball catcher from Pee Wees thru college and umpired high school, college and semi-pro baseball for many years thereafter. Mike also enjoyed woodworking, playing cards and cribbage, friendships, American history, reading, working out and volunteering.

Mike is survived by his daughter Susan (Kent) Lovern, Milwaukee, Wis., and son James (Claudia) Hanna, Sioux City; grandsons, Sam and Zach Lovern and Keean and Isaiah Hanna; sister, Candace Stielow, Urbandale, Iowa, his nieces, nephews and their families, and some wonderful cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his baby sister. Sandra Jo; aunts and uncles. A graveside service will be held on Friday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, followed by a luncheon. A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, Oct. 22, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Chuck's, 3610 6th Ave., Des Moines. Feel free to wear your Hawkeye attire. If desired, memorials may be directed to the Shriners Hospitals for Children (shrinerschildrens.org).
