W.H. CARRIGG EXPIRES HERE

Retired City Sanitation Officer Was 65 Years Old.

William H. Carrigg, 65, 1121 Oak Avenue. Retired city sanitation officer here, died Tuesday afternoon at a laundry establishment at 505 Pearl Street, where he had gone on personal business.

Dr. James Christiansen, coroner, said Mr. Carrigg suffered a heart attack.

Mr. Carrigg had lived in Sioux City since his birth, December 12,1884. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Carrigg.

E.W. Baumann, secretary of the laundry firm, said that Mr. Carrigg paused to chat after completing his business and was stricken during the conversation.

Mr. Baumann said he called an ambulance, but that the former sanitation chief died before it arrived.

Suceeded His Father

Mr. Carrigg was given a regular appointment to the sanitation post January 2, 1924, to succeed his father, the late Michael Carrigg. At the time he took the civil service examination for the appointment, the law required that he also qualify as a police captain. Under that rating, he was the ranking captain in the seniority list for several years.

In 1945, Mr. Carrigg was granted a leave of absence to perform sanitation, inspection duties for the army.

The position of sanitation officer was abolished by the city council in May of 1948 and Mr. Carrigg applied for retirement pension, which was granted June 16, 1948.

Active in Lodges

During his 25 years of service with the city he took an active interest in sanitation research and improvements and attended sanitation conventions in many parts of the United States.

He was a member of the Holy Name society and Legion of Mary society of St. Joseph Catholic church.

An active member of the Knigths of Columbus, he was a past faithful navigator of Garrigan assembly, fourth degree, K. C:

He was also a member of the Eagles and Elks lodges.

Survivors include the widow Catherine, and two brothers, Elmer of Sioux City arid Fred in California.

The body was taken to the Larkin funeral home.
