Sloan, Iowa

John R. Amundson, 75, of Sloan passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022.

Services will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family is encouraging attendees to dress casual or wear car/race shirts.

John R., the son of Edward and Vernice (Brandt) Amundson, was born Sept. 23, 1947, in Sioux City. John grew up, attended school, and was a lifelong resident of Sloan. He was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Vietnam era until his honorable discharge.

On Dec. 22, 1967, John was united in marriage to Patsy Thompson, and this union was blessed with three children. John worked at the International dealership in Onawa, Iowa, then went to work at Harry Batcheller's Farm Store in Sioux City until he couldn't work any longer due to health issues.

John enjoyed classic cars, car races, and watching his son Jason play darts. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Patsy of Sloan; daughter Melisa Haakenson and fiancé Steve Fontenot of Le Mars, Iowa; son Jason and wife Britni Amundson of McCook Lake, S.D.; four grandchildren Steven Haakenson, Kristina Haakenson, Stevie Amundson, and Quinn Amundson; mother-in-law Darline Thompson; and in-laws Sandy Gordon, James Thompson, Debbie Leichtnam, and Kathy Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Johnny; son-in-law Troy Haakenson; siblings; father-in-law John Thompson; and brothers-in-law Terry Thompson and Sid Brondsema.
