Leone Marie Bernard was born May 30, 1913, near Anthon, the daughter of James and Josephine (Umhoeffer) Bernard. She was raised in the Anthon area and attended St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated from Mount St. Mary's High School and Mount St. Mary's College in Cherokee, Iowa. She taught country school in Cherokee County for several years. She was employed as the librarian for the Woodbury County Library in Moville, Iowa for 21 years, where she received the Employee of the Year in Woodbury County. She retired in 1979. She entered the Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center less than a month ago.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters and the Altar Society. She enjoyed reading, music and gardening.

Survivors include a brother, Frank J. Bernard of Anthon; two sisters, Mildred M. and her husband David Macken of Rochester, Minnesota, and Joan Barnas of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
