James Napolean Bernard, son of Joseph and Martha Bernard, was born December 15, 1881, in Woodbury County near Anthon and was a lifetime resident of the Anthon-Correctionville communities.

He married Josephine Umhoeffer on February 14, 1912, at Anthon. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Anthon and the Knights of Columbus. He passed away May 15, 1960, in a Sioux City hospital.

Survivors include five daughters, Leone Bernard of Correctionville, Mrs. Joseph Barnas of Waterloo, Mrs. John Didier of Bridgeport, Nebraska, Mrs. David Macken of Rochester, Minnesota, and Joan Bernard of Minneapolis; two sons, Frank of Correctionville and Wilfred of Anthon; a sister, Mrs. Martha LeDoa of Kansas City, Missouri, and 26 grandchildren.

He was preceded by his parents, wife, and daughter, three sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon on Tuesday morning, May 17, with Rev. A.M. Conlon officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
