Death Claims "Flory" Gearen

Cudahy Vice President, Former Sioux Cityan, Dies in Chicago

J. Florence ("Flory") Gearen, Oak Park, Ill., a former Sioux Cityan, died Monday afternoon in Chicago hospital after a heart attack suffered in his office at the Cudahy Packing company main Office.

Mr. Gearen was a "Sioux City boy" whose rise was sure and rapid in the world of big business. At the time of his death he was vice president of the Cudahy packing company.

From a position as bookkeeper in the Sioux City office of the Cudahy Packing company, in 1905 at the age of 23 he was promoted to assistant office manager, and a few years later he was appointed office manager. He was transferred to the main officer of the company at Chicago as general manager at the parent office about 10 years ago. He advanced rapidly and was elected secretary-treasurer of the company, which office he held until a few years ago when his health demanded rest from large responsibilities. He was made a vice president of the company, which office he held at the time of his death.

He was son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Gearen of Sioux City.

Survivors include the widow, Christine; three sons, Philip, John and James, all of Oak Park, and two daughters, Sister Mary Maurine of St. Mary's convent, Chicago, and Mrs. Robert Woods of Chicago; five sisters, Mrs. A. F. McKennan, Sioux City; Marie, Early, la.; Mrs. Frank Ryder, Omaha; Mrs. Leo L. Wilson, San Jose, Cal., and Mrs. Henry Holland of Early; four brothers, Rev. P. P. Gearen of Early; William and James L. of Oak Park, and J. A. Gearen of Chicago, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in Oak Park Thursday morning.

CUDAHY OFFICIAL DIES.

CHICAGO, ILL. -- John F. Gearen, jr., 62, secretary of the Cudahy Packing Co. since 1936, died Monday night of a cerebral hemorrhage suffered earlier in the day in his office. He had been associated with Cudahy since 1902, working in Sioux City, la., until 1914.
