George M. Whisman 1843 - 1925

George M. Whisman, the 10th of 18 children born to David and Catherine (Brown) Whisman, was born in Monroe Co., Indiana, March 16, 1843.

At eight years of age the family home was transferred to Bloomington, McLean Co., Illinois, where he lived until coming to Cherokee Co., Iowa, in the fall of 1874. He married Mahala Beaver at Bloomington, Illinois, on March 22, 1863. They were blessed with seven children. Their names are Emma, Mary, Sarah, Edward, Harvey, Cora Belle, and Gertrude, four of whom, Emma, Mary, Edward and Cora Belle, together with their mother who died on May 27, 1890, have preceded the father and husband in death. For 50 years his home was near Washta, Iowa.

He was a member of the Congregational Church of Washta. He died March 18, 1925, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.E. Fellom, at the age of 82 years and 2 days.

Funeral services were conducted at the Morning Star Church by Rev. W.N. Baker assisted by Rev. Zeigler. The body was laid to rest in Good Hope Cemetery. He leaves three children, Mrs. Richard Thompson of Sioux City, Mr. Harvey Whisman of Kingsley and Mrs. C.E. Fellom of Washta, one brother, A.J. Whisman of Washta, three sisters, Mrs. Amanda Sellman of Sibley, Iowa, Mrs. Tyrene Beeley of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Arabella Reese of McLean Co., Illinois, 22 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
