Joseph Sargent 1839 - 1916

Joseph Sargent was born July 1, 1839, in Corinna, Maine. He died in the Iowa Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown, Iowa, on Sunday, July 16, 1916, at the age of 77 years and 15 days.

His mother died when he was a small boy, leaving him and his sister (now Mrs. Richardson). Later in life he came with his parents to Wisconsin. After staying a few years he removed to Minnesota in which state he grew to manhood. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Second Battery, Minnesota Artillery, joining February 14, 1862. He received an honorable discharge August 16, 1865.

He was married to Mrs. Libbie Clinton in Faribault, Minnesota, in January 1865. To them were born four children, Mrs. Birdie Palmiter, Albert, George and Loren. He also had one stepdaughter, Mrs. Addie Clinton. About 1880 he came to Iowa and in 1887 was again married to Ardelia Lyons. To them were born three children, the only one living being Lee of Cherokee County.

Besides his children he leaves three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Richardson of this place, with whom he had made his home for several years, Mrs. Ann Hovey of Idaho, and Mrs. Carrie Hines of Illinois, and two brothers, W.S. Sargent of Boone and J.P. Sargent of this place.

He was a member of William Baker Post G.A.R. of this place.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon, July 17, on the E.W. Savage lawn with Rev. Masters of the M.E. church in charge.

Out of town relatives present included W.S. Sargent and daughters, Mrs. D.E. Clark and Mrs. W.R. Patrick of Boone, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Sargent of Washta, Mrs. Birdie Palmiter of Dundee, Minnesota, Frank and Bud Richardson of Lake Andes, South Dakota, Roland Sargent of Anthon, Mrs. Ted Sprout of Scotland, South Dakota, Mrs. Benjamin Hathaway and daughter, Miss Alta Baker of Pierson, Mrs. Ina Stevens of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
