Matthew Stephen Short

Sioux City

Matthew Stephen Short, 45, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., surrounded by family.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel on Stone Park Blvd. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior at the funeral home. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Matt was born April 16, 1977 in Sioux Falls, to Stephen and Deborah (Putnam) Short. He graduated from Canton High School in 1995 and continued his education at Doane University in Crete, Neb. He was active in football, track and field, and a member of the Alpha Omega fraternity, where he served as Vice President, before graduation in 2002. After graduation, he moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where he co-owned a mortgage company, First Liberty Home Loans. In 2005, he moved back to Sioux City and joined the family business, J&L Staffing, where he worked his way up to Vice President of the company.

Matt was best known for being a family man. On June 14, 2001, his life changed forever with the birth of his beautiful daughter Matilyn. He loved nothing more in this world than being her dad. Matt and Bridget Plattenberger met in the spring of 2020, and he knew from the beginning she was the one. They united in marriage on June 4, 2022, at their family lake home on Silver Lake where they shared some of their best memories. He truly was the best father, husband, son, brother, and uncle to his family.

Matt was an avid New York Yankees fan. He never missed a game and loved spending time watching them with his family, whether it was on TV, in Tampa for spring training, or at Yankee Stadium. He enjoyed spending time at the lake with family and dubbed himself a professional jet skier. One of his many talents and great joys was cooking for everyone.

He is survived by his wife Bridget Short of Sioux City; daughter Matilyn Short of Sioux City; parents John and Deborah Wockenfuss of Sioux City; sister Jennifer and husband Heath Coburn of Sioux City; brother Joshua and wife Anne Short of Sioux City; brother-in-law Ryan and wife Elizabeth Plattenberger of Rochester, Minn.; nieces and nephews Emily, Aiden, Tess, Liam, Ava, Sofia, and Grace; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Matt was preceded in death by his father Stephen Short; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
