Marvena B. Alvarez, 78, died Thursday, July 21, 2022, at her residence in Sioux City.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, Morningside Chapel, 1801 Morningside Ave. Service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at First Evangelical Free Church with burial to follow in Graceland Park Cemetery. Marvena Blanche Petzoldt, the daughter of Edward and Hazel (Ronfeldt) Petzoldt was born April 26, 1944, in Sioux City. She was baptized into the Lutheran Faith. Marvena graduated from Westwood Community School.

Marvena married John M. "Mick" Alvarez on Aug. 1, 1964, in Sioux City, to which two children were born. Marvena was employed at HyVee for 31 years. She attended First Evangelical Free Church.

Marvena enjoyed playing several types of cards with friends and family, taking walks with her kids and her special "four-legged kids," her flowers, and gardening.

Marvena is survived by her children, Ken L. Alvarez of Sioux City, and Brenda A. Alvarez of Sioux City; siblings, Lila (Roger) Irwin of Kuna, Idaho, and Dwight (Donna) Petzoldt of Merrill, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Hazel Petzoldt; husband, John M. "Mick" Alvarez; brother, Don Petzoldt; two nephews, Tony Alvarez and Michael Scott Irwin; grandparents; and several cousins.
