Col. Walter L. Friesner 1916 - 1983

Col. Walter L. Friesner, 66, 6680 Correctionville Road, died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital after a short illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday heran Church in Lawton. The Rev. Mark Buchhhop and Chaplain Marvin Suhr will officiate. Burial will be at Banner Township Cemetery in Lawton. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at W. Harry Christy Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave. Military graveside rites will be Conducted by National Guard personnel.

Col. Friesner was born on July 1, 1916, at Sac City and he lived there until he was about 18 years old. He graduated from high school in Lytton and from Iowa State University with a degree in horticulture. He taught in various schools in central Iowa and in World War II joined the Army as a second lieutenant, serving in the South Pacific. He served as a major in Korea during the Korean War and taught ROTC as a captain at ISU. He moved to Sioux City about 20 years ago and retired from the Army National Guard as a colonel in 1974. He married Marlis M. Olson on March 28, 1974, and owned and operated Friesner Landscaping & Garden Center until his retirement the following year. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and served as president of that congregation.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Brian at home, Wayne of Willingboro, N.J., Craig of Kingman, Ariz., and Walter Jr. of Lawton, Okla.; four daughters,' Mrs. Lois Williams of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Kay Jones of Albuquerque, N.M., Mrs. Phyllis Newton of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Mrs. Doris Borchert of Dousman, Wis.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Steven (Cindy) Ploen of Pierson; a sister, Gladys Morrison of Austin, Minn., and nine grandchildren.
