Douglas "Doug" Dean Dickson, 1950 - 2022

Douglas "Doug" Dean Dickson, 71 of Dakota Dunes, SD passed away after a lengthy battle of cancer and stroke complications on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at his home, with his wife and family at his side. Funeral Services will be held 10:30am Monday, May 2, 2022, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1101 S. Cornelia Street Sioux City, IA. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service (9:30am) at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

Doug was born October 2, 1950, in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Theodore (Ted) and Ruth (Nichols) Dickson. He was raised in Sergeant Bluff, IA and graduated from Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School in 1969. Doug continued his education at Western Iowa Tech (WIT) in mechanics. On January 10, 1976, he married Mavis Campbell of Akron, IA at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

Doug worked with many to include Meier Towing, Van Buskirk Construction, and C&H Towing. In 1989, he started Dickson’s Rolloff’s from the ground up. Growing the business to be sold 10 years later to the largest company in the industry. He went on to run other business such as, The Airport Lounge at the Sioux Gateway Airport, Salix Gas and Dickson’s Service and Trucking where he thoroughly enjoyed driving and “going down the highway of life”.

Doug was the life of the party - - he knew how to make you laugh and have a good time. No one was a stranger, and he would do anything for his family and friends. He loved and enjoyed spending his time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He had a love for sailing, camping, motorcycle riding, annual trips to Sturgis, SD with his buddies, car shows, cooking, good food and traveling. Doug was a lifelong member and Elder of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Throughout the years, Doug was a proud blood donor helping others and donating over 17 gallons of blood until he no longer could. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mavis Dickson, who cared for him to the very end at home, two sons, Jamey (Jamie Modlin) Dickson, Justin (Kristy) Dickson, daughter, Jana (Jeff) Johnston, brother, Ron (Betty) Dickson, sister, Sandy (John) Pietrusiewicz, sister-n-law, Judy Dorhout, Shirlene (Larry) Madsen, Marylou James, and Pat (Roger) Harris, six grandchildren, JD, Scott, Aubrey, Landon, Macie, Brekken, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother’s-n-law, George Dorhout, Forey James and nephew, Curtis Dorhout.
