John C. Lanning, 79, of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at a local hospital.

A private memorial service will be held Monday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Online condolences can be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

John was born April 14, 1942, in Springfield, Mo., the son of John and Alene (Carter) Lanning. At a young age, the family moved to Sioux City, where he attended Central High School.

On July 11, 1959, he married Kathleen Zook. To this union, four sons were born. Shortly after marriage, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served for three years.

Following his discharge from the Army, he began working for Western States Manufacturing where he worked until his retirement at age 65.

John enjoyed fishing, golfing, and watching sports. He was also an avid hunter, particularly pheasant hunting.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 61 years, Kathleen of Sioux City; sons, Mike (Bione) Lanning, Mark (Lisa) Lanning and Matt Lanning, all of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Mitchell.
