House fire kills man; two women escape

A Sioux City man was killed Wednesday in a fire at his home.

Authorities said James Osterholt, 47, died at St. Luke's Medical Center in Sioux City. Two women escaped the flames. Angela Osterholt, 26, and Kathy Foster, 36, were revived at the scene, said Brian Thiele, spokesman for the Sioux City Fire Department.

Osterholt is in critical condition at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. Foster is in critical condition at St. Luke's.

No cause for the fire has been determined, Thiele said.

James Alan “Teacher" Osterholt, 47, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at his residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Evangelical Free Church, with the Revs. Bruce Lawler and Jim Rahn officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Osterholt was born June 25,1953, in Sioux City, the son of Roger and Elizabeth (Hinds) Osterholt. He graduated from Westwood High School in Sloan, Iowa, in 1971. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He later received his associates degree in diesel mechanics and later a bio-medical electronics degree from Western Iowa Tech Community College.

He married Patricia Lynn Smith in 1976 in Sioux City. He was self-employed as a mechanic and carpenter in the Sioux City area.

Survivors include his mother of Salix, Iowa; his ex-wife of Sioux City; three sons, Roger and Trevor, both of Sioux City and James of Minneapolis; a daughter (who later died), Angi Lynn Osterholt; two brothers, Ronald and his wife, Elizabeth of Ponca, Neb., and Paul and his friend, James Moody of North Liberty, Iowa; seven sister and their husbands, Linda and Les Kuiken of Des Moines, Diann and Mike Pelelo, Tina and Gene Holbrook and Mary and Dennis Weaver, all of Sioux City, Pam and Steve Eliason of Salix, Ann and Brian Jones of Jamesville, Wis., and Chris and Larry Wilkinson of Young America, Minn.; and a granddaughter, Tara Osterholt.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Pallbearers will be Mike Larson, Tom Buchholz, Gene Miller, Don Keleher, Rob Hanson and Rick Klameth.
