Vance J. Steele, 89, 2719 Third street, died in a hospital Tuesday after a six-week illness.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p. m. Thursday at the Heaton funeral home. Rev. Homer Watkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Holly Springs, la, cemetery.

Mr. Steele was born at Woodsfield, O., April 12, 1859. He moved to Holly Springs in 1879. He married Florence Metcalf August 30, 1887, at Smithland, la. She died in March 1948. Mr. Steele taught school and farmed in the vicinity of Holly Springs until 1918 when he retired and moved to Sioux City. He was a member of the First Christian church.

Survivors include four daughters. Mrs. Jennie Mahanna of Loveland, Colo.; Mrs. Julia Saunders of Los Angeles, Mrs. Marie Teel of Hornick, la., and Mrs. Nina Harbeck of Sioux City; a son Walter of Hornick, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
