Mrs. Robert Boyd dies of injuries from train crash

Mrs. J. Robert Boyd, 71, longtime Le Mars resident, died Friday (Nov. 18, 1977) at the Worthington Regional hospital from injuries suffered at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, in a car-train crash on highways 59 and 60 at the south edge of Worthington.

The Worthington Daily Globe reported the Continental driven by her husband. J. Robert Boyd, Le Mars, was southbound when it struck a moving Rock Island freight train at an unmarked crossing.

The train was derailed by the impact.

Mr. Boyd was injured and remained in satisfactory condition at the hospital with a fractured left arm, facial lacerations, and a dislocated right ankle. He has been removed from the intensive care unit.

Mrs. Boyd remained in the intensive care unit of the hospital until her death. She suffered multiple injuries, a hospital spokesman said.

Ironically, the same train was struck by a northbound car on the highway after it derailed, the Worthington paper reported. That car was driven by a Worthington man, Duane Fogelman, who was not injured, and his car was not badly damaged.

Mr. and Mrs. Boyd had lived at 1429 First Ave. SW in Le Mars.

Mrs. Boyd, the former Mildred B. Cose, was born Nov. 26,1905, at Deloit, to Charles and Cora Brogden Cose.

She lived at Deloit until 1925 when she moved to Hornick. She lived there for 20 years and then moved to Maurice where she lived until 1946. The couple lived here until 1975 when they moved to Lake Wales. Fla.

Her marriage to J. Robert Boyd took place Jan. 30, 1925, at Deloit. She was a member of the United Methodist church.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 Wednesday at the First United Methodist church, Le Mars, with Rev. Everett Staats officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Sioux City, under direction of the Mauer funeral home.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Survivors are her husband; a son John Boyd, Le Mars; a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Shirley) Ostlund, Lincoln, Neb.; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Kelsey, Hornick; Mrs. Bernice Robinson, Reseda, Calif, and Mrs. Opal Hansen, Deloit.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Virginia in 1967; two brothers, Wayne and DeOrr, and two sisters. Ruby and Benji.

(actually buried Willow Twp Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa with husband)
