Jose “Joey” Miguel Nava III 1984 - 2021

Jose “Joey” Miguel Nava III, 36, of Sloan, Iowa, formerly of Whiting, Iowa, passed away January 16, 2021 at his residence.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 21, 2021 at the Whiting Christian Church, Whiting, Iowa with Pastor Josh Nink officiating. (Social distancing measures must be followed-Due to Covid- 19 restrictions- Masks are required.) Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday, January 21, 2021 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Joey was born February 7, 1984 in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Jose Miguel Nava and Darlene Marie (Dawdy) Hast.

He graduated from Whiting High School with the class of 2002. He then attended Iowa Lakes Community College studying Culinary Arts. Joey then worked for Winna Vegas Casino as a Cage Cashier for several years until his health declined.

Joey collected knives, weapons, skulls, and loved playing gaming systems of all kinds. Joey had a love of Greek Mythology and reading books. He even studied the Chinese language and was intrigued with learning new things. He always enjoyed cooking meals and being around all of his family, especially his nephews and niece. Getting together with his family meant the world to Joey.

He is survived by his mom, Darlene Hast of Whiting, Iowa; dad and mom, Charlie and Cathy Mortensen of Whiting, Iowa; three sisters, Amy (Jeff) Zeitler of Sioux City, Iowa, Angel Nava of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Anna (Marc Prefontaine) Groth of Alberta, Canada; an adopted brother, Wesley Baker of Sloan, Iowa; nephews, Jeffery Zeitler and Jordan Zeitler; niece, Jaydan Zeitler; five uncles; eight aunts, and over fifty cousins; other relatives; and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jose Miguel Nava; brother, Jose Miguel Nava II; grandparents, Melvin and June (Green) Dawdy and Angel and Nancy (Cole) Nava; uncles, Dean Dawdy and Daniel (Diane) Dawdy; and cousins, Jason Dawdy, Mindy Gardner and David Nava.
