Betty Lou Wheelock

Sioux City -- Betty Lou Wheelock, 90, of Sioux City, passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2021, after a brief illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with her granddaughter-in-law Dr. Trisha Wheelock officiating. Visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Due to COVID-19, masks are required and social distancing will be enforced. Betty Wheelock was born May 1, 1930, to George and Laura (Loker) Kneebone at Jefferson, S.D. She attended country school initially and later graduated from Elk Point High School. She taught in a rural school before marriage to Gilbert Wheelock in 1948. They made their home in Sioux City. She then worked in secretarial roles for multiple businesses before retiring as a secretary for the Sioux City Public Schools system.

Betty found special purpose in her family, her faith and her volunteer service to many organizations. She taught Sunday School when her children were growing up and Bible School to her grandchildren. She was a deaconess, past president of BWC and Bethany and played in the bell choir at Third Presbyterian Church. Betty was a 50-year member and PNG of Truth Rebekah Lodge where she received the Decoration of Chivalry. She was a member and past president of Siouxland Crafters.

She was an active member of Crescent Park PTA, volunteered at the school library, and was the room mother through her children’s years there. She was a den mother for her son Doug’s Cub Scout troop and active in Boy Scouts until Doug received his Eagle Scout award. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader as well as 4-H leader for her daughter, Cindy, who won many blue ribbons at the fair.

Her children and grandchildren were precious in her sight.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Doug (and Marilyn) Wheelock of Sioux City; daughter, Cindy (and Roger) Johnson of Sioux City; grandsons, Lee (and Trisha) Wheelock of Des Moines, Adam (and Gretchen) Wheelock of Sioux City, Barry (and Sarah) Wheelock of Prior Lake, Minn., Myles (and Stacia) Johnson of Sioux City, and Ross Johnson (and Marissa Williams) of Sioux City; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert; brothers, Clarence and Roy Kneebone; and sisters, Madonna Yates and Blanche Derochie.

Memorials can be directed to the IFOPA in honor of Betty’s great-grandson Lincoln Wheelock.
