Alan Roy Certain Sr.

Nehalem, Ore., formerly Sioux City -- Alan Roy Certain Sr., 60, of Nehalem and formerly of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020, from a heart attack, while visiting Mesa, Ariz.

Burial was in National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.

Alan was born Sept. 17, 1960, in Oakland, Calif., to Richard Roy Certain Sr., and Diane (Johnson) Certain. Alan moved with his family to Sergeant Bluff, graduating from Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 1978. Alan had four sons with his former spouse, Beth (Goodsell) Certain. Alan enlisted in the United States Army in November 1980. He spent 11 years serving in Korea, Ft. Hamilton, N.Y., Ft. Drum, N.Y., Ft. Sill, Okla., and Germany.

Alan spent the next 14 years in the Inactive Ready Reserve in Sioux City. He signed up for active duty again in 2005, serving in Iraq and Ft. Riley, Kan., until his retirement from the Army in 2012. He then moved to Nehalem. Alan enjoyed doing gardening, yard work and remodeling houses.

Alan is survived by his two sons, Al Jr. of Naples, Fla., and Aaron of Nehalem, Ore.; four grandchildren, Brayden, Ezra, Adalynn and Penelope; brothers, Stanley Certain of Sioux City, and Rick (Judy) Certain of Sioux City; sister, Kimberly (Jeffrey) Duttry of Erie, Pa.; and nieces and nephews, all of Sioux City.

Alan was preceded in death by his infant son, Alexander; his 16-year-old son, Adam; and his parents, Richard Roy Certain Sr. and Diane Certain.
