Cherie Ann Dandurand Salix, Iowa Cherie Ann Dandurand, 53, of Salix, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at hospital in Sioux City.

Private family services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. There will be a live stream available to attend online at the church’s website. Visitation will be open to the public with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Due to COVID 19, masks are required and social distancing will be enforced. Burial will be at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Salix, Iowa. Cherie was born on Oct. 1, 1967, the daughter of Edward and Judy (Richter) Heilers. She was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated with honors from Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1986. She received her bachelor’s degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1990 and her master’s degree from Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., in 2010, both with academic honors.

Cherie also excelled as a high school and college athlete. As a senior at Prairie High School, she was named All-Around Female Athlete of the Year. She went on to excel in both volleyball and basketball at Loras College in Dubuque. Cherie married Robert Dandurand on June 27, 1998, in Moville, Iowa. To this union, two sons were born.

In 1991, Cherie began her teaching career as the middle school history teacher at Woodbury Central in Moville. She was a devoted teacher, leader, mentor, and was an integral part of the Woodbury Central faculty for 30 years. She served as the president of the Woodbury Central Education Association for many years. Her dedication and devotion to teaching was unmatched and will be irreplaceable.

She was also a head coach and assistant coach for volleyball and basketball for many years. Cherie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she taught CCD for 15 years. She was active in Boy Scouts as the Chair of the Troop Committee and was her sons’ number one cheerleader for all of their activities. In her free time, Cherie was an avid reader. She was an amazing wife, mother, teacher, and friend and will be missed and cherished by many.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Dandurand; sons, Richard and Eddie Dandurand all of Salix; father, Edward Heilers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; siblings, Kevin Heilers of Cedar Rapids, Greg Heilers of Kansas City, Mo., Gary (Tracy) Heilers of St. Charles, Ill., and Traci (Dan) Byrnes of Waukon, Iowa; father-in-law, Richard Dandurand of Salix; brother-in-law, Daniel (Laura) Dandurand of Sioux City; sister-in-law, Tammy (Brian) Klingensmith of Nashville, Tenn.; 12 nieces and nephews; and one great-nephew.

Cherie was preceded in death by her mother Judy Heilers; and her mother-in-law Diane Dandurand
