Joseph L. Mitchell, 82, passed away on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 in Sioux City surrounded by his family.

A private service will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church on Friday with Pastor Jay Denne officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Condolences can be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Joseph was born to Hazel and Virgil Mitchell on July 5, 1938, in Olivet, S.D. Joe attended school in Sioux City. In 1955 Joe joined the US Navy where he crossed the equator and became a shellback. Joe returned to Sioux City where he married Joan Linnea (Rye) Mitchell. They were blessed by two children, Cheryl and Todd.

Joe worked for several companies in Sioux City over the years including Zenith and retiring from L & R Communications in 1998. Joe loved playing fast pitch softball and participated in several leagues. Joe also loved golfing and in 1985 achieved a “hole in one.” He loved spending endless hours participating and supporting his grandchildren in their activities.

He is survived by Joan, his wife of 60 years; his children, Cheryl Connot of Sioux City, and Todd Mitchell of Topeka, Kan.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his brothers Tubby (Peg) Mitchell of Sioux City, and Ken (Jan) Mitchell of Albuquerque, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Virgil (Sonny) Mitchell, and Grant Mitchell.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Siouxland.
