CHEROKEE, Iowa - Died Sergeant Bluff
Ruby Olsen, 74, of Cherokee died Monday, Dec. 16, 1996, at the Embassy Rehabilitation and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, with a 12:45 p.m. family prayer service, at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Ray Kruger officiating. Burial will be in Schaller Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by the Pilot Rock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.
Mrs. Olsen was born Dec. 14, 1922, north of Mercedes, Texas, the daughter of Arthur H. and Ethel (Hartman) Bruggeman.
She attended school in Edcouch, Texas until 1935, when she moved with her family to Schaller, Iowa.
She attended Eden 9 country school and graduated from Schaller High School in 1941.She worked in the office of Cadillac Motor Company in Detroit, Mich.,, for a short time before moving to Lawton, Okla.
She married Mervyl Olsen on Jan. 8, 1944, in Kansas City, Kan. The couple moved to Wayne, Mich., where she was employed with Norwayne Housing Administration. They moved to Cherokee in 1947, where they established Olsen Body Service in 1952. She operated the business office until 1973 and Olsen Rentals until January 1993. The couple lived in Windsor Heights and West Des Moines, Iowa from 1977 to 1986, when they retired and returned to Cherokee.
She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Mary McDonald Circle, the Naomi Circle, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Pilot Rock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Senior Citizens, and the Cherokee Flying Club. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Gary and Connie of Cherokee; two daughters and their husbands, Delores and Lonnie Painter of Fulton, Ill., and Diane and Bill Bean of Winchester, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Kyle, Kevin and Kory Olsen, Ryan Painter and Josh, Jennifer and Katrina Bean; a brother and his wife, Dale and Ruth Bruggeman of Harker Heights, Texas; and sister, Joy Stevens of Killeen, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son.
