Joyce Kay (Kapusta) Schimmer, age 72, of Danbury, Iowa, passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020, at her residence surrounded by her loved ones in Danbury, Iowa.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 17, 2020, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury, Iowa. Father Richard D. Ball will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery of Danbury, Iowa. A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the Rosary at 6:45 p.m., on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury, Iowa.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the governor’s proclamation, masks are mandatory and social distancing guidelines apply during all services. During the visitation we are limited to 15 people in the church at a time. Please plan accordingly.

Joyce was born in Ravenna, Ohio, on March 12, 1948 to Stanley and Florence (Drugan) Kapusta. She grew up in Ravenna, where she received her education at Immaculate Conception Catholic School and graduated from Ravenna High School in the Class of 1966.

After high school, she enrolled at Miami University in Oxford, OH and later at Akron (OH) City Hospital School of Nursing and became a licensed practical nurse. Joyce practiced nursing at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio; Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver, Colorado, Dr. Ganzhorn’s Office and Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa and Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa. Joyce had a passion for nursing and administered great care to her patients and their families.

On November 4, 1972, Joyce was united in marriage to Thomas Schimmer at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ravenna, Ohio. The couple made their home in Danbury, IA. To this union, two sons were born, Ryan Thomas and Joel Robert.

Joyce was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury, IA and was a member of the Rosary Society and taught CCD at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Danbury. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who cherished any time spent together and preparing a meal for her family. Her grandchildren always looked forward to receiving greeting cards and care packages with their favorite treats from grandma. An avid sports fan, Joyce was a passionate fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes.

Left to embrace their loving memories of Joyce include her husband of 48 years, Tom Schimmer of Danbury, IA; her sons Ryan (Jennifer) Schimmer of Aurora, CO and Joel (Sheila) Schimmer of Burlingame, CA; three grandchildren: Patrick and Molly Schimmer and Ava Schimmer; two sisters Janice (Thomas) Pacenta of Hudson, OH and Jill (Rick) Lewis of Kent, OH; three brothers Gerald (Marcia) Kapusta of Wauchula, FL, Gregory (Sherry) Kapusta of Georgetown, KY and Jeffrey (Kellie) Kapusta of Kent, OH; brother-in-law John Schimmer of Napa, CA; sisters-in-law Betty Meier of Sioux City, IA and Jean (Bill) Karhoff of Danbury, IA along with many other extended family members and friends.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Florence (Drugan) Kapusta, father and mother-in-law Clem and Mary (Gahan) Schimmer, brothers-in-law Rev. Robert J. Schimmer and Leo Meier and sister-in-law Catherine Schimmer.
