SIOUX CITY - Joyce C. Meckenis, 95, of Sioux City died Monday, May 25, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Mrs. Meckenis was born Nov. 5, 1913, in Moville, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Amanda (Schwalband) Everts. She graduated from Moville High School in 1931. She attended Wayne State College for one year and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor's degree in education in June 1935. She also attended one semester of graduate school. She had lived in Sioux City since 1936.

She married John S. Meckenis on Oct. 20, 1945, in Cordgling, Idaho. He preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1992. She was employed as a social worker and supervisor with the Department of Social and Human Services for 38 years, retiring in December 1977.

She was a member of the Ladies Aid at St. Casimir Catholic Church. She was presently a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She also was a member of the American Business Women's Association.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Lois and Hanns Hagen of Kansas City, Mo.; a grandson and his wife, Brad and Angela Hagen of Leawood, Kan.; a granddaughter and her husband, Kirsten and Chris La Fata of Florissant, Mo.; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marie Stodzas of Sioux City; two lifelong twin goddaughters, Miss Constance Jean Johnson of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mrs. Renee Marie Wright of Dubuque, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; a brother; and a sister.
