Norman Mathison

SIOUX CITY - Norman Mathison, 66, of rural Sioux City passed away Saturday, May 23, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

A celebration of life will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. Steve Jewett of New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron officiating. Cremation had taken place. Visitation with the family will be 5 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.carlsenfuneralhome.com.

Norman Robert Mathison was born Sept. 30, 1942, in Sioux City, the son of Albert and Inez (Freng) Mathison. He attended school in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1961. Following graduation, he moved to Texas and worked for a manufacturing company. A year later, he moved back to Sioux City, where he worked for several businesses before going to work for the Soil Conservation Service in 1963.

He was united in marriage to Genice Koskovich on Jan. 17, 1964, in Sioux City. He continued working for the Soil Conservation Service as a civil engineering technician, helping build earthen dams throughout the state of Iowa. On Sept. l, 2001, he retired from the conservation, he then worked for Mathers Construction in Correctionville, Iowa in quality control. He retired again in 2008.

He was a member of New Horizons United Church of Christ. His passion in life was his Civil War era cannons and rifles. He enjoyed building cannons and participating in competitions throughout the Midwest. Through his passion in artillery, he joined the New Ulm, Minn. Artillery, Wisconsin 8th Artillery and the 2nd Iowa Light Artillery Battery. He also enjoyed flying aircraft's of all kinds. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of more than 45 years, Genice of rural Sioux City; two children, Tim Mathison and his wife Lisa of Jefferson, S.D., and Amy and her husband Bruce Graves of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two grandchildren, Lea and Travis Mathison; a great-granddaughter, Ellieana Mathison; and a brother Ron Mathison and his wife Linda of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Gail Fowler
