STORM LAKE, Iowa (Died Sioux City) -Doris Mae Ericksen, 88, of Lakeside, Iowa, formerly of Holstein, Iowa, died peacefully, surrounded by her family and loved ones, on Thursday, May 21, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Private family memorial services will be 9:30 a.m. today at Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery at Storm Lake. There will be no visitation. Doris was born July 20, 1920, in Holstein, Iowa, the daughter of Olga and Winfield Carnes. Doris graduated from Holstein High School in 1938. On April 27, 1940, she married William Ericksen of Holstein; they were married 63 years. Doris lived with her husband in Tyler, Texas, while he was serving his country in World War II. After the war, they returned to Holstein, where they owned and operated the Standard Oil Station and the Star Motel in Holstein for 30 years.

She was a loyal employee of the Good Samaritan Home for 15 years. Upon retirement, William H. and Doris enjoyed their winters in Arizona and returned each spring for the summer season. Doris enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and her two cats. Doris always made her family top priority spending as much time as she could with Bill and family. She had a very caring heart and was always taking care of everyone else.

As a couple, they enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and picnicking. They enjoyed going to Island Lake in Minnesota for 60 years, passing the tradition to their children. Doris enjoyed life to the fullest; she had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. She also enjoyed embroidering, knitting and reading all the newspapers. Doris was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother all her life.

Those left to mourn her passing are her two sons, William of Alta, Iowa, and Robert and wife, Jill of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Diane Henrichsen of Rogers, Ark., and Joanie and husband, Doug Clausen of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; 11 grandchildren, Scott Ericksen of Alta, Wendy Ellis of Wakefield, Neb., Sean and Bryce Ericksen of Dallas, Ruth (Jake) Gilespie of Rogers, Elizabeth and Anthony Henrichsen of Rogers, Ryan Clausen of Atlanta, Ga., Trisha (Colin) Schmitt of Early, Iowa, Lindsay (John) Armstrong of North Liberty, Iowa, and Aaron Clausen of Dakota Dunes; great-grandchildren, Paige and Emily Ellis, Kylee Schaffer and one piece of joy on the way; a sister, Joann Kennedy; a brother, Clark (Pat) Carnes; and extended family and friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents and husband, her brother, Doug Carnes; and her sister, Donna Johnson.
