SIOUX CITY -Chancy A. Dean, 89, of Sioux City passed away Monday, May 18, 2009, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center, Hospice Unit.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Yanney officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyer-broschapels.com.

Chancy was born in Napier, Mo. on July 20, 1919, the son of Clarence and Nora (West) Dean. He attended Central High School.

He married Iela P. Kaus on May 25, 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received the Purple Heart Medal when his LCS15 was sunk by a Kamikaze pilot at Okinawa. After his discharge, he worked at a packing house, D & S Oil and for a friend as a laborer. Then, another friend taught him to be a bricklayer. He had worked for Klinger and many places around the country, most recently B & S Masonry.

He is survived by his son, Chancy Dean and his wife, Kay, of Sioux City; daughters, Dee and her husband, Gary Barnes, of Brenham, Texas, and Karon Porsch of Sioux City; a brother, Roger Dean and his wife, Barbara, of Chantilly Hills, Va.; grandchildren, Neil Porsch, Luana Miller, Vicki McCuddin, Michelle Dean, Gary Barnes and Chancy Dean; and great-grandchildren, Bryce Miller, U.S. Navy, Logan Miller, Mandi Porsch, Chad Wiese, Zachary Dean and Zachary Barnes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iela; and two brothers, Lloyd and Beryl Dean.
