Delbert H. Mertens

SIOUX CITY - Delbert H. Mertens, 83, of Sioux City died Friday, May 15, 2009, surrounded by family in the comfort of his son and daughter-in-law's home in Sergeant Bluff. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Waterbury Funeral Service.

Delbert was born on June 25, 1925, in Germantown, Iowa, the son of Fred and Louise (Schroeder) Mertens. He attended country school in the area.

He was united in marriage to Marlene Buchholz on June 12, i960, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Delbert worked 28 years at Crescent Electric, retiring in 1987. He also owned and operated a Laundromat for several years in the area. After retirement, Delbert was the custodian at St. Paul's Lutheran School until 2006.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and its card club, the Mr. & Mrs. Club. He was a long-time bowler on the church league and served on different church boards. Delbert enjoyed his garden and growing flowers.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene; two sons, Bruce and his wife, Jane of Janesville, Minn., and Michael and his wife, Dana of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Barbara Mertens of Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren, Joshua, Brittany, Brianna, Chantilly and Michael Jr.; a brother, Burdette Mertens and his wife, Ruth of Portland, Ore.; three sisters, Evelyn and her husband, George Selzer of Portland, Ore., Helen and her husband, Glen Jorgensen of Paullina, Iowa, and Betty Wilcoxon of Spencer, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William Breitbarth; and a sister, Dorothy Klatt.
