Gary R. Hof

SIOUX CITY - Gary R. Hof, 67, of Carbondale, 111., formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at his residence after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma.

Memorial services were held May 2 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Gary Reed Hof was born in Sheldon, Iowa, Feb. 2, 1942, to Wilbur and Hazel (Potter) Hof. He moved to Sioux City with his family in 1944. He attended public schools, graduating from Central High School in i960.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1961 and served proudly in submarine service and later in recruit training. He retired in 1983 as a master chief. He married Diane Babbie in 1965. They divorced in 1975.

He married Melody Rice in 1976 in Boulder, Colo. He loved playing fast pitch Softball and golf.

Survivors include his wife, Melody of Carbondale; two sons, Michael Paul of Carbondale and Jeffrey and his wife, Linda of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two daughters, Kelli and Rick Thiele and Keri, all of Jupiter, Fla.; his father, Wilbur Hof and his wife, Shirley of Sioux City; a brother, Galen Hof and his wife, Jaclyn of Sioux City; two sisters, Jane Brubaker and Milly McCullough, both of Louisville, Colo.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents; and his mother. Gary will be greatly missed by family and friends
