SIOUX CITY - Howard E.C. "Howie" Karras Jr., 61, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009, at his residence.
Services will be l p.m. Monday at Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Valerie Heller officiating. Burial will be Memorial Park Cemetery, with military graveside services provided by the U.S. Navy. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.
Howard was born on Dec. 19, 1947, in Sioux City, the son of Howard and Clara (Merchant) Karras Sr. Howard attended school in the Leeds area, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on the USS Yorktown during the Apollo 8 recovery operations in December of 1968. Howard was working at the WalMart near Leeds until recently. He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his father, Howard Sr.; his children, Alex Karras and Andrea Karras, both of California; three sisters, Christine Yarte, Anna Karras and Patricia and her husband, Tim Hodgins, all of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara.
