Carl A. Merchant Sr.

SIOUX CITY - Carl A. Merchant Sr., 77, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at a local hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Glad Tidings Lighthouse in South Sioux City, with Pastor Michael Ring officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Tuesday and continue until the time of service at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Carl was born on Sept. 13, 1931, in Norfolk, Neb., to John A. and Anna E. (Schenzel) Merchant. He was raised in Elgin, Neb., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., before relocating to Sioux City following World War II. He married Donna Myers, to which union six children were born. Following their divorce, Carl married Lynn D. Lester on Nov. 21, 1973, in Elk Point, S.D. To this union, one child was born.

The family moved onto a farm on the outskirts of Sioux City. Carl had enjoyed his career in construction his entire life. He also enjoyed raising chickens and rabbits on the farm as well as watching movies, especially westerns and Disney productions. He collected Happy Meal toys and Farmall tractor replicas. He was a proud member of the Glad Tidings Lighthouse.

Carl is survived by his wife, Lynn D. Merchant of Sioux City; children, Debra Merchant of Sioux City, Constantine Bruneau of Utah, Carl Merchant Jr., Franklin Merchant, Carolyn Merchant, James Merchant and Travis Merchant and his wife Victoria, all of Sioux City; a sister, Mary Harnack and her husband Ronald of Remsen, Iowa; brothers, Eugene Merchant and his wife Norma of Elk Point, S.D., John Merchant and his wife Elaine of Sioux City, Kelly Merchant and his wife Pam of Kansas, Frank Merchant and his wife Rena of Omaha, and Robert Merchant of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Howard Karras; sisters-in-law, Ernie Merchant and Karolyn Merchant; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Oscar, Douglas and Charles Merchant; a sister, Clara Karras; grandsons, Robert Merchant, Jesse Merchant and Jimmer Merchant; a great-grandson, Tyler Roberts; a half brother, B.J. and a half sister, Juanita.
