Burt M. Linscott

SIOUX CITY - Burt M. Linscott, 74, of Norfolk, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Norfolk, with the Rev. James Brewer officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted by the Mosaic Lodge 55 A.F. & A. M. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard, American Legion Post 16 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1644. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Home for Funerals in Norfolk.

Burt was born July 19, 1934, in Sioux City, Iowa, and worked in retail until his retirement. A graduate of Sioux City Central High School, known as Castle on the Hill High School, he would go on to join the United States Marine Corps and would go to Morningside College in Sioux City upon his release from the military. He earned a bachelor of science in business degree from Morningside. In his youth he boxed, winning numerous awards and championships, continuing to fight professionally for several years.

On October 2, 1959, he wed Karen Davis and to this union four children were born, Terry, Sheryl, Jeffrey and Timothy.

He was an active Mason, holding dual membership in both Norfolk and Sioux City. For many years he was active in the Cub Scouts in Norfolk, acting as Scout Master, and his involvement with the organization and helping youth earned him the distinction of being named a member of the Great Navy of Nebraska by Gov. Bob Kerrey in 1986. He was also very active locally with the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Merchants, VFW and American Legion.

His hobbies included coin collecting, woodworking, watching Nebraska football, gardening and storytelling, delighting family and friends with his ability to tell a tale.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; sons, Terry, Jeff, Timothy; a daughter, Sherry; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and granddaughter, Erin.

Pallbearers will be Terry Linscott, Jeff Linscott, Timothy Linscott, Eric Linscott, Bill Conway, Cody Paulsen.

Honorary pallbearers are Bob Wiese, Sheryl Lister, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews.
