SIOUX CITY -- Lois Ann Suckstorf, 78, of Sioux City, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandma "LoLo", went home to be with her heavenly father Monday, April 13, 2009, with her family by her side.

Private graveside services will be at a later date in Westfork Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Lois Ann was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Sioux City, to Everett and Pearl (Baird) Phillips. She grew up in Climbing Hill, Iowa, and was a standout forward for the Climbing Hill basketball team during her high school years. She graduated in 1949 and received a basketball scholarship to Mount View College, but due to home obligations, she was unable to go.

She married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Wayne H. Suckstorf on June 2, 1951, at First Baptist Church in Climbing Hill. While Wayne was in the U.S. Army, they lived at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and El Paso, Texas. When Wayne served in the Korean conflict, she lived with her mother, Pearl.

On Feb. 15, 1952, their only daughter, Judith Ann, was born. When Wayne returned from the war, they made their home in Climbing Hill, before renting a farm from her mother near Climbing Hill in 1954. In 1965, they purchased and moved onto the farm that they farmed and lived on until July 1, 1994. They then moved to Kingsley, Iowa, due to Wayne's health. Wayne passed away June 23, 1997, less than a month after celebrating their 46th wedding anniversary together.

She took great pride, joy and love in being a farmer's wife. She loved planting huge gardens and giving the fruits of her labor to family and friends. She loved painting the farm buildings and fences red and white and took great pride in their farm. The couple milked cows, raised cattle, hogs and chickens and farmed the land that she still owned and rented out to this day. She also loved to fill the kitchen table with food whenever they had hired men or friends and family over as guests. No one ever walked away hungry.

The couple loved to dance and spent many years dancing in the Siouxland area with their many friends. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Climbing Hill and belonged to Women for Christ and the church choir.

In 2000, she moved to Lawton, Iowa. On Dec. 30, 2008, she moved to Countryside Senior Living in Sioux City due to her declining health.

Her greatest joy in life was being with her family. She enjoyed going out to eat with them and watching the great-grandchildren play. She was a very loving, caring and giving mom, grandma and great-grandma. She will be missed so very much and we thank God each day we had with her. She was truly a blessing to us.

Survivors left to cherish her and her precious memories are her only daughter and son-in-law, Judi and Salvador Valladares of Lawton, Iowa; her granddaughter, Candice of Sergeant Bluff; great-grandchildren, Kelsey of Fort Collins, Colo., and Teddy, Tevin and Kealey of Sergeant Bluff; her sister, Lila Ruring of Sioux City; two half brothers, Leon and Carleen Steinhauer of Sioux City and Lary and Carol Steinhauer of Fort Collins; her sister-in-law, Vicky Philips of California; a stepsister, Jerry and Bill Jessen of Bronson, Iowa; a stepmother-in-law, Dottie Suckstorf of McCook Lake, S.D.; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Those welcoming her home to heaven are her loving husband, Wayne; her special grandson, Shane; her precious great-granddaughter, Kali; her mother and father; sister and brother-in-law, Lola and Joe Ewing; a brother, Dale Phillips; brothers-in-law, Don Wulf, Claude Ruring and Gary Suckstorf; her mother and father-in-law, Della and Harry Suckstorf; a nephew, Reid Mason; and dear friends, Glovanna and Luella.

The family of Lois would like to thank Hospice of Siouxland and Dr. Robison for their support. We also want to thank the entire Countryside staff for their care, compassion, love, concern, prayers, soothing words and support in the last three and one half months. Thank you for showing my mom the utmost respect and dignity she so deserved. We will always be thankful for you because all of you are truly angels working on earth.
