SIOUX CITY -- George W. Dowlin, 91, of Sioux City died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at North Park Independent Living following a brief illness.

Abiding by his wishes, graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday in Calvary Cemetery, with Monsignor Roger Augustine officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

George was born June 3, 1917, in Sioux City, the son of George H. and Una E. (Brooks) Dowlin. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1935.

He married Mary Walker on Aug. 4, 1941, in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the service, he returned to Sioux City and lived here until 1949. He worked for Cudahy's for more than 50 years in various position including vice president of the casing division. The couple lived in various parts of the eastern United States and traveled to several foreign countries. He returned to Sioux City in the early 1990s.

He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and more recently Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. While living in Chicago, he was the head of the Tootsie Roll drive for all of Chicago for the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Isaacson, Frances Method and LaReine Vance.
