SIOUX CITY -- Irene V. Andersen, 86, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at a local nursing home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Dan Doran officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Irene was born April 23, 1922, in Anamosa, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Margaret (Breen) Rion. She spent most of her childhood in Arkansas. She attended school in Arkansas and later in Iowa.

She married Arland R. Andersen on March 20, 1942, in Omaha, where they lived for a few months. Arland went into the U.S. Marine Corps. She then visited relatives in California for a few months before finally settling in Sioux City, where they lived the remainder of their lives. She baby-sat many children, including babies, through the Lutheran Welfare Services. She continued to take care of children through the 1960s.

She was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed decorating cakes for many others. She took great pride in her Irish heritage and doing work in her yard and gardens, which she and Arland shared over the years. She took great pleasure in the times spent with family.

She is survived by her children, Dennis (Elaine) Andersen of Grimes, Iowa, Diane (Loren) Kuecker of Le Mars, Iowa, and Lynette (Jeff) Johnson of Sioux City; her grandchildren, Lara Andersen (Matt Wells) of St. Paul, Minn. (Charles and Andrew), Wayne Andersen of Grimes (Athena and Olivia), David (Marsha) Kuecker of Le Mars (Zerick, Samantha and Colt), Daniel (Tanya) Kuecker of Essex, Iowa (Cody, Duncan and Cheyenne), Benjamin Kuecker of Brunsville, Iowa, and Rion Johnson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews; and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arland R.; her parents; her daughter, Lisa Annette and her son, Alan Robert; four brothers, Earl, Claude, Ernest and Arthur; and two sisters, Margaret Steinkoenig and Wilma Prince.
