SIOUX CITY -- Thomas Klanderud Grindberg, formerly of Sioux City, died Aug. 24, 2008 in Miami, Fla.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, Texas, with the Rev. William Blasdel officiating. Military rites will be conducted.

Thomas Grindberg was born Oct. 29, 1926, in Sioux City, to Carl and Olive (Klanderud) Grindberg. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1944. He served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army.

When he returned from the service, he went on to earn his bachelor of arts degree from Morningside College in Sioux City, his bachelor of science degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and his master's degree in psychology with special interest in special education from the University of South Dakota. He worked as an educator, teaching high school math and science in Iowa, Nebraska and Florida. He was the principal and superintendent of schools in Obert, Neb.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Anne Marie and Dale Van Dyke of Denton, Texas, and Elizabeth Renee and Darin Hallett of Frisco, Texas; five grandchildren, Nicole Wright, Ryan Fitts, Faith Van Dyke, Rachel Hallett and Lauren Hallett, all of Texas; two great-grandchildren, Elise and Noah Wright of Lake Dallas, Texas; a brother and his wife, John Mark and Esther Grindberg of Circle Pines, Minn.; a sister and her husband, Ruth and John Hantla of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David C. Grindberg; and a nephew, Tom Grindberg.
