24 March 2009VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Daniel Joseph Kavanaugh of Virginia Beach, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at his home in Virginia Beach after his long, bravely fought battle with cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ocean View, Va., with the Rev. John J. Dorgan officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Tidewater Drive Chapel. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
Danny was the son of Edward H. Kavanaugh Sr. of Smithfield, Va., and the late Eileen Gunn Kavanaugh. He grew up in Ocean View among many friends, in the area of Norfolk, Va., known as Vatican Circle. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic School, went to high school at Eastern Academy, and received his associate's degree from Tidewater Community College and his Bachelor of Science Degree in business administration from Old Dominion University.
After college he had a successful managerial career working for such companies as Revco, Beneficial Finance and the Gateway Company in Sioux City, where he lived for 10 years.
A longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3548, Danny was well known for being an easy going, happy-go-lucky guy, unless, of course, he was watching Notre Dame football, the Yankees or the Redskins.
The way he lived his life was the way he fought his illness -- with great strength, quiet courage and remarkable dignity. He will be missed more than words can say.
Besides his father, he is survived by his loving wife, Beth Deibler Kavanaugh and son, Thomas Andrew Kavanaugh of Virginia Beach; his sister, Eileen K. Meusel and her husband, Robert of Virginia Beach; four brothers, Edward H. Kavanaugh Jr. of Southern Shores, N.C., Patrick Welsh Kavanaugh and his wife Georgette of Norfolk, Timothy M. Kavanaugh Sr. of Chesapeake, Va., and John W. Kavanaugh of Los Angeles; five aunts, Harriet Gunn Smith of Virginia Beach, Jean Gunn O'Berry of Huffman, Texas, Carolyn G. Gunn of Smithfield, Nancy C. Query of Norfolk and Ann W. Kavanaugh of Portsmouth, Va.; an uncle, Paul Joseph Gunn of Downers Grove, Ill.; eight nieces and nephews, Curtis P. Kavanaugh and Ryan W. Kavanaugh of Norfolk, Timothy M. Kavanaugh Jr. and Molly K. Kavanaugh of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert W. Meusel Jr. and Collin P. Meusel of Virginia Beach, Kirby M. Carter of Rhode Island; and almost 40 first cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting donations be made to the V Foundation of Cancer Research at www.Jimmyv.org.
