SIOUX CITY -- Merril W. Lind, 92, of Norfolk, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Heritage of Bel Air Chapel in Norfolk. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, with military rites conducted by the Iowa National Guard honor team. Arrangements are under the direction of Howser-Fillmer Mortuary of Norfolk.

Merril was born Nov. 14, 1919, in Wausa, Neb., to Gust and Bertha (Skalberg) Lind. He grew up on a farm near Wausa and graduated from Wausa High School and business school in Omaha.

On July 17, 1943, he married Peace Dolores Follis at Camp Shelby, Miss. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II as a tech sergeant and medic. The couple had one daughter. They lived most of their life in the Morningside area of Sioux City. He worked for Great Northern Railroad as a shipping clerk. After retiring, the couple traveled and spent winters in Tucson, Ariz., until relocating to Sergeant Bluff. After losing his beloved wife of 60 years, he moved to Norfolk in 2005 to be closer to family.

He was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. The couple enjoyed golf, bowling, square dancing, traveling by motor home and spirited card games with friends. He enjoyed helping with their daughter's Girl Scout troop and was often seen delivering boxes of Girl Scout cookies or going along to help with campouts at Ponca State Park.

He is survived by their daughter, Sharon Lind-Charron, and her husband, Paul Charron, of Willow, Alaska; a brother, Sheldon Lind, and his wife, Arlis, of Norfolk; a sister, Gladyce Berg of Santa Cruz, Calif.; nieces, Lou Kirby of Crofton, Neb., Lorena Dittman of Elkhorn, Neb., Carlene and Mark Albin of Norfolk and Patty Lind and her partner, Vern Roberts, of Felton, Calif.; and a nephew, Jim and Stacey Lind of Fernly, Nev.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dolores, in June 2004; and a brother, Russell.
