SIOUX CITY -- Mercedes "Perry" F. Nooney, 88, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home, after a long illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin J. Schrad, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nooney was born on Aug. 24, 1920, in Merrill, Iowa, to Edmond L. and Theresa B. (Penne) Mertes. She attended Catholic school in Le Mars, Iowa. She graduated from Merrill High School in Merrill, Iowa, and then attended comptometer school in Dayton, Ohio. She worked at the Wright-Patterson Air Field in Dayton, Ohio, during World War II.

She married Robert C. Nooney on Jan. 15, 1949, in Sioux City. Bob died on Jan. 13, 1992, in Sioux City. After her marriage, she became a housewife, homemaker and volunteer. She volunteered at the Queen of Peace, the Bargain Center, Briar Cliff Library, Mercy Medical Center and many other organizations. She belonged to the Catholic Women League, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Marian Health Auxiliary, the Carmel Guild, Friends of Briar Cliff Library and Queen of Peace.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the church confraternity. She volunteered at the Blessed Sacrament school and church offices. She helped clean and iron the altar clothing as well as helping clean the church. She was a church lector and an Eucharistic minister. She had a large flower and vegetable garden at her home. She was a kind and loving woman, always putting her family and others first. She had a strong faith for God and her church.

Survivors include two daughters, Marianne N. Buford of Sioux City, and Teresa Piere and her husband, Terry of Shawnee, Kan.; a son and his wife, Gregory and Ibu Nooney of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren, Michael Jensen of Boulder, Colo., Sarah Buford of Anaheim, Calif., Beth Jensen and Mary Buford, both of Sioux City, Karen Buford of Norfolk, Neb., Linda Buford of Spaulding, Neb., Jamie Nooney, Daniel Nooney, Gladys Nooney and Helen Nooney, all of Sioux City, Christy Stimac, Katie Piere, Julie Piere and Brian Piere, all of Shawnee, Kan.; and five great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jordan, Justice, Javonni and Keven.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson, David Nooney; a great-grandson, Zachary Nooney; a son-in-law, Timothy Buford; two sisters, LaVern Mertes and Patricia Courey; two brothers-in-law, Shaffe Courey and John Nooney; an aunt, Anna Penne, her mother's twin sister; and special friend, James Fleming.

Pallbearers will be Brian Piere, Jamie and Daniel Nooney, Michael Jensen, Randy Taylor and Marti Reilly.

Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Church, Hospice of Siouxland or Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
