MAPLETON, Iowa -- Alfred J. Uhl, 96, of Mapleton died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at his daughter's residence in Sergeant Bluff.

Services will be held today in Sioux City.

Services will also be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton, Iowa, with Monsignor Mark R. Duchaine officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a 7 p.m. vigil service, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Alfred John Uhl was born June 26, 1912, to John and Elizabeth (Welte) Uhl of Danbury, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Nadine Marie Scheer of Mapleton on Nov. 21, 1939, and they celebrated 66 years together. The couple rented a farm northwest of Mapleton until purchasing their own farm east of Mapleton in 1948. He retired from farming in December 1990 and the couple moved to their home in Mapleton. After Nadine's death on Feb. 9, 2006, he resided with his daughters Linda and Burnita.

He was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton for more than 69 years. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends about his many farming experiences and his interests in trains and traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Burnita Ankerstjerne of Sergeant Bluff and Linda and her husband, Bob Otto, of Mapleton; five grandchildren, Rob Ankerstjerne, Suzanne Ankerstjerne, Lisa Ankerstjerne, Melissa and her husband, Troy Kruse, and Rebecca and her husband, Nicholas Engdahl; four great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Mahala and John Kruse and Emma Engdahl; a sister, Helen and her husband, Leo Weber, of Mapleton; two brothers, Leo Uhl and his wife, Martha, of Danbury, Iowa, and Charles Uhl and his wife, Irene, of Ida Grove, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Delmond Scheer and his wife, Mary, of Mapleton; a sister-in-law, Georgia Scheer of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine; his parents; four sisters; two brothers-in-law; and a son-in-law.
