Died in Sioux City

WASHTA, Iowa -- Henry F. Johnson, 82, of Washta, formerly of rural Aurelia, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa, with the Rev. Jim Steen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset View Cemetery, Washta, with military rites. There will be a family prayer service at 1:15 p.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Henry was born Oct. 19, 1926, in Cherokee County, Iowa, to Hjalmer and Elin (Samuelson) Johnson. He attended Grand Meadow Consolidated School. In 1941, he was baptized and confirmed at the Carmel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was married to Colleen Hanson on Sept. 14, 1958, in Cherokee. He had farmed north of Aurelia for many years. He moved to Washta on Feb. 1, 2003.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He enjoyed music, dancing, dogs and going to farm sales.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Charles and Holly Brown of Burnsville, Minn.; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Chasson Brown; a brother and his wife, Jack and Janina Johnson of Aurelia; a sister, Rosa Johnson of Holdrege, Neb.; and 11 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Colleen on Sept. 14, 2007; his stepmother, Kerstin Johnson; and a stepsister, Maj-Britt Gibson.
