SIOUX CITY -- John F. Seubert, 80, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at his residence following a brief illness of acute myeloid leukemia.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., with the Rev. Tony Nester of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation will follow the service Friday. Burial will be at a later date in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. John was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Wilbur H. and Florence (Hood) Seubert. He attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from East High School in 1947. He attended Morningside College and spent four years in the Iowa Air National Guard.

On Nov. 6, 1954, he married Elaine M. Krause in Oak Park, Ill. Together, they owned and operated Seubert Tree Experts Inc. for more than 40 years, retiring in 1991. As an arborist, he specialized in tree preservation and care and always continued his education in arboriculture.

He was a member of the International Shade Tree Conference, the Sierra Club, the Sioux City Museum Historical Association, the Sioux City Art Center and Friends of the Public Library. He also was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. In earlier years, he was active as a Boy Scout and was a founding member and past president of the Sioux City Ski Club. He was involved with the Historic Council Oak Tree. The last time he worked on it was in 1956. He recently donated a section of the tree to the Sioux City Public Museum.

He had many interests. He loved to travel and had visited 35 different counties. He also enjoyed downhill skiing in the Untied States and Europe. He was an automobile enthusiast, an airplane pilot and an amateur photographer. In his latter years, he enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels in his yard.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; two sons, Walter J. Seubert of Aspen, Colo., and Jim Seubert and his wife, Janell, of Columbia Heights, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Cory, Stephan, Adam and Elizabeth Seubert.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur; his mother, Florence; and stepmother, Helen Wissler Seubert.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Traver, Dale Hill, Loren Larson and Mel Forsling.
