SERGEANT BLUFF -- Darlene E. Lilly-Shultz, 65, of Sergeant Bluff died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at her residence following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the American Legion Hall in Sergeant Bluff. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Darlene, the youngest girl of 10 children, was born Feb. 9, 1943, in Tupper Lake, N.Y., to Ernest and Sarah "Sally" Dechene. She grew up in Tupper Lake and graduated from Holy Ghost Academy in 1959. She was a graduate of Syracuse Beauty School.

In 1964, she was united in marriage to Tom Lilly at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Tupper Lake. They made their home in Sioux City until his untimely death in 1975. She was united in marriage to William "Bill" Shultz on April 10, 1982. they made their home in Sergeant Bluff since then.

She was employed with Terra Chemical from 1973 until she was downsized in 1998. She was the first female operator to be hired by Terra. She put her skills to work with other companies in Sioux City including Sabre Communications, Jebro Incorporated, R.E. Scott, Gutter Helmet and most recently the Sergeant Bluff Community School.

She was a cribbage player, a crossword puzzle enthusiast and enjoyed an exciting game of Scrabble. She was a wonderful cook and taught her grandchildren to bake the best carrot cake in the world. She was very involved with her grandchildren, attending their sporting events, school concerts and taking them on vacation. Besides her children, they were the most important thing to her and she loved each one more then they will ever know.

She leaves behind her husband, Bill; three beautiful children and their families, Sarah and Karel Walters and their daughter, Emmelena of Sioux City, Caroline and Bill Tompkins and their children, Korie, Kylie and Brennen of Sergeant Bluff, Tom and Carrie Lilly and their children, Sophia and Genevieve of Lake Stevens, Wash. She was a proud stepmother leaving behind two stepchildren and their families, Rob and Deb Shultz and their children, Jamie, Jacob and Zachary of Sergeant Bluff and Tracy and Mike Knapp and their children, Jason and Jesse. Left to remember her are her brothers and sisters and their families, Donna and Bucky Kentile, Dorothy Bedore, Donald and Shirley Dechene, Robbie and Joann Dechene and Dennis Dechene, all of Tupper Lake, N.Y., Bobbie and Noonie Dechene of Long Lake, N.Y., and Petsy and Lloyd Harris of Cassville, N.Y.; her brother-in-law, Alan Delair of Syracuse, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Agnes Morrow of Selby, S.D.; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog,Buddy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Tom; a brother, Sonny; her sister, Deedee; and sisters-in-law, Caroline Kvidera and Jeanette Lilly.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the family in her name.
