SIOUX CITY -- Mary Elizabeth (Ahmann) Drag of Castro Valley, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Dec. 26, 2008, in Castro Valley after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. She would have been 85 in January 2009.

Mary was born in Struble, Iowa, the fourth of six children to Henry Ahmann and Philomene Wictor. She spent her childhood in Sioux City. She left Sioux City in 1945 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. until 1947, a move considered rather daring for a woman at that time.

She met her future husband, Ted Drag, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, and they were married in 1950. The couple spent the next 11 years following Ted's Naval assignments while raising five children. They lived in Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Long Beach, Calif., Great Lakes, Ill., and the Philippines before settling in Castro Valley, Calif. in the San Francisco Bay area in 1961. She lived there until her death.

She was very active in her community and was an avid and accomplished tennis player. She will be remembered as a loving, understanding and devoted mother and grandmother. She had a boundless energy and a zest for life that few could equal. Her wisdom, courage, generosity and most of all, her wonderful laughter, will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her brother, Tom Ahmann; her children, Joellen, Chris, Connie, Theresa and Kathryn; her grandchildren, Kenny, Cassie, Layton, Tamara and Jack; and many, many cherished friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; her brothers, Stanley, Don and Jay Ahmann; and her sister, Jean Sandman, all since March 2007.
