HORNICK, Iowa -- Frank Dowling, 56, of Avoca, Neb., formerly of Hornick, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at his residence.

Memorial services were held Dec. 29 at First Congregational Church in Weeping Water, Neb., where the Rev. Portia Iverson officiated. A flag presentation was conducted by the American Legion Post 237 of Weeping Water.

Franklin was born Aug. 29, 1952, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Phyllis (Hayworth) Dowling. He was raised and attended school in Hornick and Sloan, Iowa, in the Westwood School District. He also attended school in Plattsmouth, Neb., where he graduated from Plattsmouth High School in 1970. He served his country in the U. S. Navy from 1970 to 1972. He worked as a carman at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 30 years.

He was a member of the Railroad Union Local, American Legion Post 237 and ABATE. He was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Hornick.

Survivors include his wife, Debra (Lehnherr) Dowling of Avoca; three daughters, Dawna Devwane, Natalie Dowling and Sarah Dowling, all of Avoca; a son, Benjamin Komasinski and his fiancee, Carissa Wingender of Omaha; his mother, Phyllis Dowling of Hornick; two brothers, Jerry (Sandra) Dowling of Louisville, Neb., and Bob (special friend, Fawnda) Dowling of Sandy, Ore.; six grandchildren; and numerous aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
