SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Mary Jean Mann, 79, of South Sioux City died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at Regency Square Care Center.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, with the Revs. Paul Hodge and Sava Leida officiating. Burial will be Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Mary was born March 5, 1929, in Sioux City, the daughter of George and Jeannette (Spanos) Paulos. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1947.

She married Donald F. Mann on Feb. 15, 1952, in Sioux City. She was employed for 11 years at Northwestern Bell, then worked for the Area Education Association. She then worked for Blue Cross of Iowa and finally for the Mary J. Tregelia Community House. After their retirement, the couple lived in Davenport, Iowa, for a couple of years before moving to Houston, Texas. In 2002, they moved to South Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church, where she was very active. She was a member of the St. Thomas Ladies Club and taught Sunday School. She belonged to the Postal Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 64.

Survivors include her husband, Donald F. of South Sioux City; two sons, Gregory Mann of Davenport, Iowa, and David Mann and his fiancee, Nancy Berthoud of Cambridge, Ill.; a daughter, Candice C. Mann of Houston, Texas; a brother and his wife, Tom and Fran Paulos of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Kay Byrne of Sioux City and Betty and her husband, Don Edison of Sioux Falls, S.D.; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a senior companion, Rita Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law, Donald Byrne; and her husband's four brothers and two sisters.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Byrne, Craig Byrne, Charlie Barker, Blake Barker, Talon Sowienski and Bob Lee.
