SIOUX CITY -- Alma D. FitzGibbon, 91, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until service time Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com.

Alma was born May 27, 1917, to Ben and Blanche (Burr) VerLinden, in Dakota City. She attended and graduated from Sioux City East High School and received a nursing degree from St. Vincent's School of Nursing. She was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, serving 23 months in the Aleutian Islands.

On Aug. 9, 1944, she and Charles Thomas FitzGibbon were married at St. Vincent's Chapel in Sioux City.

Charles passed away in November 2000. After her military service, she went to work at St. Vincent Hospital until she retired in 1982.

She enjoyed gardening and working on the farm.

She is survived by her son, Michael FitzGibbon of Sioux City; a daughter, Mary FitzGibbon of Sioux City; a sister, Ruth Tarvin of Sioux City; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles in 2000; a son, Richard FitzGibbon; a brother, Charles VerLinden; and sisters, Berniece Baker and Mary Cutsinger-White.

Memorials may be directed to the Carmelite's Monastery and/or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City.
